Ultraviolet (UV) is a form of electromagnetic radiation. It constitute about 10% of the total of electromagnetic radiation of the sun. Exposing microorganisms to UV disrupts their DNA and disable their ability to reproduce.
A UV Light system uses short wave ultraviolet fluorescent lamps that have the property of sterilizing surfaces with which it comes into contact. This germicidal lamp is commonly used for disinfection in laboratories and food processing plants.
The fluorescent light bulb is placed in a glass tube (quartz sleeve) inside a stainless steel casing. It does not touch water, the glass does. In order to keep the glass clear to ensure proper UV dosage, pretreatment is recommended.
A UV light system does not affect the taste, color and smell of the water. It does not remove sediments or other contaminants.
The UV system is always to be installed after any pre-treatment. The use of a proper flow reducer ensure that the water demand does not exceed the capacity of the UV System and a shut-off solenoid is installed before the light, in case of a power failure.
All the pipes after the system must be disinfected and flushed before using the water again.
Well water quality can affect your health. When submitting a sample, make sure to clean your hands, disinfect the source and return your bottle promptly.
The Ontario Public Health tests only for e-coli and coliforms. Even if your results show no bacterial contamination it may still be unsafe to drink. Well water quality can change frequently. The best way to protect your drinking water is to test often.
